Cloud computing technology can help small to medium sized businesses become more efficient in their use of IT equipment.
This is the view of managing director of cooler designs company EcoCooling.org Alan Beresford, who suggests by reviewing IT operations and switching to virtualised data storage, companies can make significant reductions in energy usage.
He suggested there is often far too much technology being used by firms, stating: “A quick look at that and you can think, ‘well, I can use a lot less equipment and maybe use better equipment and more energy-efficient equipment and use less space’.”
Beresford suggests that cloud computing can cut down on energy used for the data centres themselves and also on the servers and cooling systems that support them.
“On their main IT equipment, lots of people are now looking at virtualisation – where you can be moving your processing around servers and you need less equipment,” the expert added.
He explained that the cooling of servers can take anything from 50 to 100% of the actual IT load, so the next step towards cost-cutting and making systems more effective would be to correctly set up a cooling system to prevent over-heating that could lead to data loss.
The story follows from Google’s recent predictions that 2012 will see small and medium sized-businesses investing heavily in cloud computing.
